Will I be disappointed?
Hello, I have an opportunity to get a 383 for my 68 Sport Satellite. I have heard by some that the 383 was the boat anchor of the big blocks and not worth building, so I would like to have some of your input. This car will just be used as a street car, but I want to be able to have fun with it.
Thank You |

Those people should be slapped, kicked, and locked in the closet under the stairs. (I'm a huge fan of the 383 big block motors
)The 383 big block is a great motor with a good amount of cylinder wall material and can be built up quiet nicely. I built one a few years back that was making just under 600 HP and globs of torque. I would buy it as long as it is in good running order. If it needs to be freshened up, thats no big deal. A mild cam, 750 carb, Performer/Performer RPM intake, 1 3/4" tube headers, and a good ignition setup will get you a good amount of power, and that is before any cylinder head work.

383
Engine Masters either May or June issue has a great article on the 383. It's compression and stroke are superior to engines like the 396. You can create serious power with a few bolt ons and it is reliable power plant. Check it out. I think you'll change your mind.

the 383 is a great motor
it is no 440, but you can get some serious power out of a 383

So it is similer powerwise to a chevy 396? If so, I will get it and start working on it. Can you post a link fo the Engine Master write up? For a simple build, 1 3/4" headers, 262 or 268 comp cam, Edelbrock Performer intake, 650-750 carb and Ignition upgrade, would it reach 400hp?
Thank You |

Check out Muscle motors and 440 source for stroker kits for the 383. Also watch the clip on Mopar Action 's website regarding the 383/496stroker build they are giving away. I think the result was 538 hp and 618ftlb torque.

well, the 396 chevy is a very powerful motor
think of it as 396>383 440>396

A 650 carb is a little ont he small side with those other parts. I'd go with a 750 that way there, if you deside to upgrade the cam to a larger one or add more stuff to it, you don'thave to buy another carb. With what you have planned, you should come very close to 400 Hp if not more.

A Stroker kit is an aftermarket assembly that increases the displacement of a reciprocating engine by increasing the travel of the piston (that is, the piston moves further up and/or down in the cylinder). This is done by using a different crankshaft where the crank pin is moved further away from the center of the axis of rotation of the crankshaft. While this increases displacement and torque it can potentially lower the limit to which the motor can rev safely compared to the stock configuration.

Well it is in my equipment shop now waiting to be brought down to the machine shop. Thank you all for your help on this, I will keep you updated on how the motor turns out, and the progress of my car of the next few months.
