Rear Window Problem in a '66 Dart wagon
 

First, I'm sorry if I am posting in the wrong forum. I'm still kinda new here. That said, here's my problem:

I have a '66 Dart 270 station wagon. Last week the window crank for the rear window stopped working. Thankfully it is stuck in the up position. But I really need to be able to get that window to work as I use a wheelchair and need to load it via the back of the car. I don't want to even try to get into it because I'm afraid that I might make something go 'sprung' - you know, like when you open up a watch and the springs all fly apart and you can never get it right again. I had an old hearse years ago that also had a problem with the rear window and I totally FUBAR'd it all.... So... Any advice from anyone, please?

You say the crank stopped working. Is the crank spinning/stripped handle or is the crank turning the regulator shaft and not moving the window?

According to my roomate, who is the one who works on my cars these days, it is just spinning/stripped. Funny, I had a '67 Chevy hearse many moons ago and it, too had the same problem. That time I took it all apart and really messed things up. I never got it working again. But yes, it seems to be stripped.

Try removing the handle and turn the shaft with a pliers or vice grip. If it goes up and down you need a new handle. If the shaft just spins, your regulator is shot.

Thanks for your reply. How do I remove the handel? I didn't see any easy way. But I'm a tad disabled and on top that I have a habit of just charging into things and making it all so much worse. I have a good friend who has taken care of my cars since my accident but he is not one who can take outside advice, if you know what I mean. If I told him I got info from online he'd just won't hear of it. If, though, I can say 'Hey try this to remove the handle....'. Ok, I'm going way too much into crap that has no point here. I blame it pain killers.... :D Thanks for any and all help I've received here.

There should be an allen screw on the center or a U shaped clip that slides in and out on the side of the handle.

I agree, AS far as i remember they had an allen head screw to retain the handle...

I just went out to look at it with my friend. We saw neither an Allan screw or clips on the side. He has a '66 wagon too, though his a Valiant, not a Dart, and has 6 cylinders. But his window thingy is exactly like mine. To hopefully help I took a couples of pics of the handle. A picture....1,000 words, and all that. Thanks, again, for the help I've received here.

My bad! I was thinking of the interior cranks. I would pull off the interior panel and check to see what's not moving. My guess is, the regulator is stripped out where the crank goes into the gear.

Hahahahahahaha.... My bad as well...

Yep... Going to have to pull the inner panel to see whats up...

The handle can still be stripped on the threads it’s cranking on but my question is what happens when you lock the handle, is it stationary or does it spin and not turn it’s inner workings? Is it possible that the handle is simply locked?
