1985 Dodge D150 318 carburetor swap
I have a 85 D150 I just picked up. It has the original Holley 2 Barrel carb. I tried to rebuild the carb and it didn’t seem to help the issue. It bogs down terrible when trying to accelerate. My question is what carb should I upgrade to that won’t brake the bank? Should I go to a 4 barrel? Upgrade to a fuel injection (seems pretty expensive) Replace with a cheap china made eBay carb (very cheap but will it last/work). I’m just looking for ideas.

I'm a true blooded American but...........those Chinese carbs have worked out well for me and others. They're cheap and haven been proven to work. By placing a four bbl on a motor that was designed for a 2 bbl cfm volume rarely improves performance. You hear a big bog on acceleration often with a delay in response. Fuel injection is expensive but pretty efficient. My personal choice is to go what the engineers deigned her to run on.

And don't forget.... If the truck has an Automatic Transmission.... Switching from the 2 barr. to a 4 barr. requires different TV Linkage and bracket.

All great information guys. Thank you so much. As you can probably tell I'm a newbie when it comes to turning wrenches. I figure the best way to learn is hands on haha. I was looking ad the cheap china 2 barrel carbs that said they fit my engine and noticed that they don't have enough vacuum connections that match my current carb. The current Holley has 2 vacuum hook up and the back, 2 on the front also 2 small wires/hoses that connect on either side of the fuel inlet. The other thing I noticed is that there is a small electronic connector that the new carb does not have. Can i bye pass some of these connections? If so which ones? any of yall have any experience with this? I can provide pictures of the current carb if needed.

Here is the back of the car showing 2 vacuum lines. The one with the blue dot goes to the PCV valve. https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/moparfo...6a087ccc6.jpeg This is a vacuum line on the left side. https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/moparfo...5542b3ab4.jpeg Where my finger is pointing and the blue circle shows the two small line attached. There was not any when I pulled the carb. |

Also here is the Holley carb stamp showing the model number |
The electrical lead to the choke is essential on the v8s, not so needed on the 6 cylinders. Without it the choke won't open all the way even though it get heat from the crossover exhaust on the intake manifold. The other electrical solenoid looking device is when the throttle is let off it slowly allows the engine to idle down without backfiring and dieseling. You could try disconnecting it and listen for backfiring. As far as all those lines coming out of the carburetor plate (bottom) those get direct vacuum and usually serve a purpose like going to the evaporator canister.
