1965 Chrysler New Yorker
I have a 65 New Yorker and I just started it up for the first time in 6 months and it is backfiring quite a bit. They are not real loud. It seems like the car is pushing gas through the system too fast and the choke seems to have something to do with it. Also, is this a symptom of a bad carborator? Any help would be appreciated?
Thanks

It could be that the fuel remaining in the carb evaporated during the 6 months that it was sitting, leaving gum and varnish in the carb. If it still has the original ignition system in it, it could be that the points have corroded.
I would clean and rebuild the carb, and install a new set of points to start with.

hey jdrummer i would use a key to start it just kidden <<<>>> it could also be a stickey valve , i would clean carb and change the oil and like all i would check for moisture , see if any rodents might of chewed any wires also it is probably just a dirty carb and or a coroded wire check your spark plug wires and coil to see if they are clean and not dryrotted

hey doc , back on one of the forums with the zinc in the oil thingy im sure that if he puts in that full synthetic oil it will clean it right up as was the problem for me on my challenger but it cleaned it to good in my engine but also the rislone is a great cleaner

Chally ..the zinc thingy I am not UP on ...other than the Tractor Supply oil. I think that if he has a sticky lifter or valve that he should just thin down what he has now. The syn oil ? .. I am not really sold on that .... on the cost vs benefit formula.

Hey DOC the thing about full synthetics is that it has alot of detergents in it to clean the engine and if the engine is not use to full synth; it will clean up the sludge buildup better than just regular oil but im sure for price wise he can just get some off the shelf oil additives to help in the cleaning but i have never been a fan of that ( just me ) anywho the FS oils have around 850 ppm of zinc and like the VR1 oil it has 1300 ppm of zinc , i talked to a valvoline rep because when i switched to FS my right bank started blowing oil and could not figure out why , so i switched back ,,
